NY Senate Hopeful about Changes to Reduce Auto Insurance Fraud

Many drivers in the state of New York have been upset because of the fact that so many criminals have seemingly been getting away with automobile insurance fraud. A week ago, the New York Senate passed three new laws that are designed to tackle the problem. Over nine years ago, a grandmother who was 71 years old was killed in New York because of the criminal actions of people who were committing auto insurance fraud.

It has taken a long time for state politicians to really take notice and understand that this type of crime is very serious. An innocent elderly woman lost her life as a result of people trying to make a quick buck by scamming auto insurance companies.

People who are involved in no fault automobile accidents can now collect compensation from their own auto insurance companies.

Auto Insurance Fraud Becoming More Prevalent

Auto insurance fraud is something that is becoming a problem in many states. Many politicians have tried to enact laws that will try to deter people from engaging in fraud but it is still going on every day in all of the 50 states.

A man from Peabody named Robert Geller decided to plead guilty to charges that he used his auto repair shop and glass repair shop to commit car insurance fraud. The man allegedly was able to bilk auto insurance companies to the tune of $28,000.

In all the man who is 53 years old was charged with a total of twenty counts of auto insurance fraud, eighteen counts of larceny over $250, and two counts of attempoted larceny.

As a part of his agreement with the Attorney Generals office, he must pay back all of the money that he obtained fraudulently and he will be on probation for nine months.

Auto Insurance Fraud A Felony

Auto insurance fraud is soon to become a felony in the state of New York.  Legislators are working on harsher penalties for those submitting false claims and other fraudulent activity according to the article “New York Senate Passes Bill Making Auto Insurance Fraud a Felony” found on the US Insurance Corner website.

The New York Senate is hoping that passing harsher penalties against perpetrators will not only encourage less fraud but will ultimately lower costs of auto insurance quotes for everyone in the state.  Fraud losses have to be made up somehow by insurers and unfortunately it ends up coming out of innocent, law-abiding customers.
