How Can Students Get Cheap Auto Insurance?

Written by Zachary Jones on March 5, 2011 – 10:43 pm

Many students, in both high school and college have trouble finding cheap auto insurance.  In fact, many believe, that they cannot possibly find affordable car insurance, and will instead have to wait until they are in their twenties to save money.  The rates get so expensive that a lot of students simply eschew driving at all until they can afford coverage.  However, there are a number of things students can do to ensure cheap car insurance rates.

Getting Good Grades

Without question, one of the best ways for students to make sure they get cheap auto insurance rates has to do with their grades.  In high school or at a university level, a student with a high grade point average, or GPA, will be eligible for better rates than a student with a low GPA.  The premise is that, according to insurance providers, those students who get good grades are typically good drivers as well as they are seen as more responsible.

Driving Well

As with adults, students who are proven to drive well are often eligible for cheap auto insurance rates.  Naturally, they need to drive carefully and must not have any tickets or violations on their driving records.  However, by taking drivers education classes, either in school or independently, they can save money on their car insurance as well.  Car insurance providers appreciate proof that a student is well-learned in the art of defensive driving.

Looking for Discounts

In addition to being able to get discounts by having solid GPAs, students can also qualify for a number of other discounts.  For example, they may be able to find cheaper car insurance by having low mileage on their car.  This is ideal for students who are on college campuses and do not necessarily drive their cars over long distances.  There are safety discounts as well, which rely on the existence of safety features like air bags, car alarms, immobilizers, steering locks and so on.

Parental Policies

Currently, there are new rules and policies which say that students can be on their parents’ car insurance policies for a longer period of time.  This can provide extremely cheap auto insurance, provided the student in question keeps his or her driving record clean.  This can be enormously helpful, although it will of course depend on the nature and specifics of the parents’ policy.  In general, however, this allows students to save a lot of money.

There are many other things students can do to find cheap auto insurance, but a surprising amount of those things depend on the student.  It is vital to have a clean driving record and a solid credit score, for instance.  Students can do things themselves, such as taking driving courses, that will ultimately allow them to find affordable car insurance.  Also keep in mind that it is best to purchase a low key car rather than anything sporty to cut down on insurance rates.

Save Money by Putting Multiple Cars on one Insurance Policy

Written by Zachary Jones on February 27, 2011 – 8:02 pm

Saving money on automobile insurance is easy when you put multiple vehicles on one auto insurance policy.   Not all insurance companies offer this type of “bundling,” but if the insurance company provides a multi car discount, the savings can be significant.  Occasionally it will even cost less to insure two cars than it would cost to insure one.   However, more frequently the savings are between 15 and 25 percent.

Multiple Car Discount Benefits

There are several benefits to having a multiple car insurance policy discount.  The main reason to take advantage of this type of discount is the premium savings.  This bulk insurance means that the more cars that are insured the more cost savings the policy holder will receive.  Another reason to take advantage of this is that all cars will be on a policy that renews at the same time.  This makes the renewal process easier and consumers do not need to wait until a vehicle is due for renewal to add it.  It also is more convenient when there are multiple drivers in the household.

Adding and Removing Cars

When there is a multiple car insurance policy adding and removing vehicles is easy.  In the case of divorce, trade or purchasing a new vehicle, all the policy holder needs to do is contact the company and change the insurance coverage to reflect the new situation.  If there are already multiple policies in place, combining policies requires you to mail or fax the policy declaration sheet to the new insurance company that is offering the multiple car discount.

Requirements for a Multiple Car Discount

Most insurance companies have a few requirements for getting a multiple car discount.  They may require that the people who are requesting the discount be married or in a state recognized civil union or the dependents of one of those unions.  Domestic partnerships often do not receive a multi car discount, although some companies do allow this.   Some policies a
